Above-ground transitions

Shielded Couplings

The professional-grade choice for above-ground pipe transitions. A flexible elastomeric seal, wrapped in a stainless steel shield for shear resistance and a rigid, code-compliant connection.

Professional-grade transitions

Built for above-ground transitions.

Proflex makes a clean, code-compliant connection for residential and commercial DWV repairs, material changes and transitions. The stainless shield is what sets it apart from a standard flexible coupling: it resists shear and holds the joint rigid and aligned.

Frequently asked questions.

Selection, installation and compliance answers for Proflex.

What is a Proflex coupling?

Proflex is Fernco's shielded coupling for above-ground pipe transitions. A flexible elastomeric sleeve makes the seal, and a stainless steel shield and clamp assembly add rigidity and shear resistance for a professional-grade connection in DWV systems.

When should I use Proflex instead of a standard coupling?

Use Proflex for above-ground DWV work where the connection needs more support than a standard flexible coupling, such as material transitions and repairs in residential and commercial plumbing. The stainless shield resists shear and helps keep the joint rigid and aligned.

Is Proflex for above-ground or below-ground use?

Proflex is built for above-ground transitions. For buried transitions that carry earth loads or where pipes may shift, use a Strong Back RC shielded coupling, which adds a stainless steel shear ring for underground service.

What pipe materials does Proflex connect?

Depending on the series, Proflex connects cast iron, plastic, steel, extra-heavy cast iron, copper, tubular and thinwall plastic, in same-material and transition joints. Each 3000-series family covers one transition type. Match the pipe on each side to the series, then pick the part by nominal size.

What does the stainless steel shield do?

The 301 stainless steel shield wraps the sealing sleeve and, with the clamp assembly, resists shear forces and keeps the connection rigid and aligned. This is the main difference between a shielded Proflex coupling and an unshielded flexible coupling.

How do I find the Mission equivalent?

Every Proflex part lists its Mission equivalent in the part-number table on this page. Search by the Mission number to find the matching Proflex part, or filter by the materials you are connecting.

What standards does Proflex conform to?

Proflex conforms to ASTM C1460, ASTM C564 and CSA B602. Listings by product line are on the Codes and Standards page. Always confirm the application with your local plumbing code.

What is the installation torque?

Tighten the clamps to 60 in-lbs with standard tools. Pressure test the joint before concealing it, and follow the installation instructions supplied with the coupling.
